Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park ( SNNP) : Shivapuri
Nagarjun National Park is situated on the northern
fringe of Kathmandu valley and is the ninth national
park in Nepal which was established in 2002 and
named after Shivapuri Peak of 2,732 m (8,963 ft)
altitude. It lies about 12 km away from the center
of capital city. It covers an area of 159 km2(61 sq
mi) in the districts of Kathmandu, Nuwakot and
Sindhupalchowk, adjoining 23 Village Development
Committees. It is the primary catchment source of
the Bagmati , Bishumati & Yashomati Rivers of the
Kathmandu Valley supplying 30 million liters of
water daily. The source of the sacred rivers of
Bagmati, Bishnumati and Yashomati are enshrined in
the temples of Baghdwar and Bishnudwar visited by
pilgrims every Nepali New Year’s day. Trekking
Routes to Nagarkot, Gosainkunda , Helambu and the
Langtang National Park passes through this park
which offers excellent awe inspiring views of the
majestic Himalaya. Within the park’s forests are
Pines, Oaks and Rhododendron trees, Shielding ferns,
Moss and a large variety of grass with wildlife that
includes Jungle cats, Himalayan Black Bear, Leopards
and the Rhesus Monkeys. Among the 177 species of
birds that are found here including 9 endangered
species like kalij Pheasants, Booted and Black
Eagles, Sunbirds and coming Hill Partridges.
About NETIF: - An Initiative towards Eco-Tourism.
SNNP is one of the unique parks in the world, in the
sense that not only nature wildlife, birds and
plants inhabit the park, but also human settlements
exist within the park. There are seven human
settlements in National park. Among the seven
settlements four settlements namely-Mulkharka,
Chilaune, Okhreni, Kune are economically deprived.
There are altogether 450 households in these four
settlements. Due to the lack of awareness and
alternative means of livelihood, the people in these
settlements are compelled to engage in the
activities that bring adverse effect in conservation
of nature . The activities are such as
deforestation, alcohol brewing, use of insecticides
and chemical fertilizers in farming, open
defecation, excessive wastes are some of the common
problems in the area.
Therefore there is an urgent need to maintain this
fragile environment by eliminating the cutting of
trees, excessive use of pesticides, and addressing
the problems related to waste and sanitation.
Additionally the local people should be capacitated
to solve these problems themselves by empowering
them and sharing the benefits from tourism at local
level as well. The most important issues to be
considered is that the local people will not be
motivated to solve these problems unless they obtain
other alternative means of livelihood, and unless
the revenew from the tourism is shared to the local
level. In order to solve this problem in integrated
manner, NETIF initiated activities that bring direct
benefits to local people and activities that bring
awareness among them. The activities include local
capacity development, Home-Stay management and trail
development for hiking opportunities within the park
areas. NETIF is cooperating between the communities
and Shivapuri National Park authority to bring
buffer zone management program for sustainable use
of the natural resources. Additionally ,NETIF also
initiated different environmental conservation
programs such as environment conservation awareness
program, waste management, installation of
incinerators, waste bins construction of Micro
infrastructures such as community house, Tourist
Shelters, View decks, public toilets, promotions,
networking information as well as local training
programs along the trekking trail,.
NETIF
ensures that the tourists visiting the park will get
full satisfaction as well as tourism contributes for
the cause of environmental conservation by helping
them generate alternative income for the local
communities.
Kathmandu Valley Cultural Trekking Trail:
NETIF has been developing 72 kilometer long “the
Kathmandu Valley Cultural Trekking Trail” (KVCT)
since the beginning of 2008. The trail starts from
Sundarijal and passes through Shivapuri-Nagarjun
National Park before ending in Panauti with possible
overnight stops in Chisapani, Nagarkot, Dhulikhel
and Namobuddha. The trail displays the best of
Nepal’s rural cultural, ecological biodiversity and
stunning Himalayan views that can be enjoyed with
simple preparation and minimal equipment. The daily
treks can be done in individual parts, a day or two
at a time with the sections of your choice or as a
four day trek. For those who do not have time to
venture further into the Himalayas you can also fine
short hiking trails in KVCT.
Hiking Possibilities in Sundarijal-Shivapuri
National Park
For hiking enthusiasts who want to travel in Nepal
and cannot go out of the valley for longer treks,
Sundarijal-Shivapuri National park area is an ideal
location for a half day to one day hiking.Having
Shivapuri National Park on our door step is a huge
asset for us. It is in fact something we must
treasure and promote. The periphery of national park
area is a viable point for hiking as well as
trekking. One can enjoy National park’s natural
beauty, biodiversity, cultural and the rural village
life style. There are many hiking trail within the
park area that may take from 2 hours to 9 hours time
and range from 1300 to 2725 m in altitude. Among
many trails some are significant for bird /
butterfly/ wildlife watching, where as other trails
are known for biodiversity and cultural aspects. The
trail also contain view points where one can
panoramic view of the Himalayas from Rolwaling to
Dhaulagiri range.
NETIF has Identified and named the trails with the
support for local communities and park authorities..
The trails have been classified into three different
categories as per the ease. There are direction
signposts in each adjacent location to ease the
hikers to identify the destinations. What is nice
about the hiking trails is that you will find small
restaurants, home stay lodges and shops that will
provide you with the refreshments such as drinks and
snacks and also meals. You can make a stop at
Sundarijal, Mulkharka, and Chisapani. One can also
take a pack of picnic lunch from restaurants in
Sundarijal or Mulkharka and carry it along to be
consumed on the way somewhere.
NETIF has established a proper tourist Information
Centre cum Nature Guide office in Sundarijal that
will provide you “ of the site” services and correct
information including hiring opportunity of nature
guides , binoculars and maps. A good guide can give
your trip some added value so NETIF has conducted
“Nature tourist guide training” program to the
locals from Sundarijal. The trainees are trained by
the specialists from BCN (Bird Conservation Nepal)
and Shivapuri National Park authority so that they
can provide more information on the birds to the
visitors coming to the park. You can also find a
Multipurpose Community Centre in Mulkharka developed
by NETIF. The Centre has been established in
comprised with Biodiversity Information Centre,
Organic Coffee Shop, and Souvenirs Shop that has
been run by the women group from Mulkharka . You can
easily reach to Sundarijal from Kathmandu if you
take private vehicle (Car/Jeep) drive. There is
parking facility in Sundarijal. Local buses are also
available in most of the hiking/ trekking entry and
exit points. Most buses/ micro van leaves from
nearby Ratna Park or Central bus station in
Kathmandu.
The trail displays the best of Nepal’s rural
culture, biodiversity and stunning Himalayan views
that can be enjoyed with simple preparation and
minimal equipment. Why not try then?
There
are various bicycle routes available in the park
periphery for those who want to ride a bicycle. Here

Nature trails - Introduction
Nature trails are trails usually in natural
areas which help in enriching visitors’
experience of the natural area
It provides a special opportunity to the
visitors to experience and become acquainted
with natural and cultural history, the
environment and ecology by appreciating it with
the help of an interpreter (a nature guide)
Understanding of names of objects and
descriptions of how system works with real
objects as examples
Conservation is enhanced through understanding
and appreciation when visitors are informed
correctly
“Take one inspired and informed interpreter,
put him in a park, big or small, that has park
users to challenge him and landscapes to
illustrate his stories of land (or seashore) and
life, and there is little necessity for
expensive buildings, exhibits, or slide shows to
create good interpretation” -York Edmonds
General characteristics of nature trails
A nature trail is:
usually short – 0.5 to 2 km, with a walking
time 30 min. to 1-2 hours
ideally is constructed as a one-way loop,
beginning and ending in the same place
is informative – signs or labels explaining
its features (signs with all the desired
information or simply numbers referring visitors
to an accompanying pamphlets)
is inviting with clear, well marked beginning;
wide and flat enough to walk in comfort; and no
steep climbs, muddy places, or physical
obstacles
is clean and well maintained – rubbish bins
are often provided at the entrance and at the
rest stops; vegetation and debris regularly
removed from the trail
Nature trail construction
I. Survey:
1. Conduct a thorough survey of the area where a
natural trail is to pass
2. Make a list of all notable natural and
historic features (e.g. viewpoints, vegetation,
waterfalls, etc.).
3. Make a sketch map including these features
and arrange a trail route to connect the
important features
II. Feasibility:
1. Check the route length and access to noted
features (walking distance) and determine
feasibility of construction
2. Basic rule:
I. Avoid disturbance to the natural environment
or disturb as little as possible
II. Avoid unnecessary damage during construction
III. Construction:
1. Remove all obstacles along the trail, and cut
overhanging vegetation to a height of 2 meters
2. Avoid cutting large trees, and do not clear
all debris down to bare soil
3. Fill depressions
4. Avoid straight stretches (provide curves)
5. Avoid “double back”, to discourage visitors
to take short cuts
6. Avoid steep slopes and waterlogged areas –
install water bars and drains so that drainage
does not run down the trail
7. Trails may be raised on a wooden walkway or
stepping stones where necessary
8. Provide simple benches at rest stops
9. Build bridges at stream crossings or deep
gorges (steps cut in rocks or a fallen tree may
be used but it must be wide enough for safety)
10. Provide entrance sign with basic information
(a map and the trail’s length, directional signs
at junctions if necessary)
3. Interpretation along the trail
2. If possible, determine a theme for the trail
3. Identify features (12 to 30) for
interpretation (information should be accurate,
interesting, brief, and easy to understand)
4. Provide a map (either on a sign or in a
leaflet); a checklist of ‘things to see along
the trail’ may also be provided
4. Maintenance of trail
2. Maintain the trail and signs and facilities
regularly
3. Monitor trail use and conditions regularly
